I found this termite nest in Pottsville today. A very healthy colony of Nasutitermes walkeri. These guys have very distinct nests in trees, and because they regulate the temperature in the galleries, often kingfishers, kookaburras or even lizards will burrow in to lay their own eggs. Obviously these native termites, are important to the ecosystem, and if possible, should always be left alone. Sometimes though, if a home is nearby, they can decimate hardwood structures like fences or worse. Basic measures though can be taken to protect your home, without having to wipe out a native species like these little guys.
